From riding Downtown and Piccolo to flying halfway across the world to race in Australia, chris is making quite a name for himself in all aspects of BMX. We did it this year, by far the best contest in my opinion. The level of riding was top notch but most importantly the vibe was amazing. Lots of you guys are wondering just how were going to do this. Lets clear this up,

December 17 marks our third contest. In past times we've followed the traditional rules of a bmx contest, sixty seconds, most backflips wins. Not this year, This year our focus is to switch up the game and do it in a way that everyone wins. Our format is a bit different from what you might expect. The riders will be broken up into teams most likely consisting of five riders. Now no one knows who their going to be paired with. Our judges will select the team that they feel did the best run. The runs will be about 5 minutes, letting everyone have there way with what ever there trying to accomplish. Due to our group format & extended time, riders will have less pressure and more time to get creative. During these runs our judges will be looking for the best riders from each team. After all the teams have had there runs the judges will call out the MVP's of each team. These riders will then advance to a final 7 minute jam session where its every man for himself! 1st place through 3rd place riders will be chosen. And after that best team will be called.
This year our focus is to ensure a good time for everyone. None of this 60 seconds do your best trick but instead heres five minutes and a group of friends, ride and see where it takes you. No pressure just a normal skatepark session with some sweet prizes available!

This year were about fun. See you all there!

Brian Piccolo Renovations.

Ive heard a few rumors of a planned Piccolo renovation but didnt know all the specifics of it. I hit up my buddy Jake, this is what he had to say....

Broward county has ~$100K to spend on Brian Piccolo park - the entire park, but the softball fields and soccer stuff don't really need much, so they are going to end up with somewhere around 80K for the skatepark, which does need the most maintenance. They decided to have meetings to get input from both groups, the skaters and the bikers, to let everybody know what is up and to get a feel for what everyone wanted to see happen. That is also when they told us they are getting the quiet waters stuff, which to me isn't really that good of a deal because they are prefab metal ramps, but they could be re-used to make new stuff. The county has carpenters that are full-time that will be assigned to work on the park. One of the main items is to fix the vert ramp because a lot of skaters and bikers want to use it, but apparently it was modified poorly in the past and that makes it really dangerous to ride. They are also re-doing a lot of the skatelite, which will take a large portion of the budget. Eventually, they are looking to have a part-time carpenter who will work directly and only for the skatepark, so if something needs fixing, they can fix it right away. We are trying to get the people who built Spinner's yard in to at least give an evaluation and suggest a course of action because the county's carpenters are most definitely not specialized in this sort of work. The county is looking for volunteers for physical labor, they have an application form you have to fill out and then they will work to set up days and times when work is going on that volunteers can show up to help speed the process along. They do not have any proper drawings of the park at all, so I decided to try and draw it in Google Sketchup and I was fortunate to have 4 days on a ship 'babysitting' an antenna, so I have gotten pretty efficient at drawing ramps. I showed it to the county people at the park on Thursday and they are over the moon about it. Having it in this format will allow us to virtually move things around in the next meeting so everyone can see how it will look.

I recently took a quick trip out to Indian Hammocks park to see the progress of the skatepark. As you can see the rebar is already in place, leaving me to believe that what you see is what you get. But the main problem i noticed was the hub of ledges in the middle. Seeing as how the park only has so much to offer it looks like everyones going to want to be riding the central spot. The problem i see happening is people running into each other. With so many ways to go, so many people are going to be intersecting. Personally it looks like a nightmare. Running into kids left and right. Hopefully people figure out how to make that work. Aside from that aspect it looks like a fun park to cruise with the vert wall and odd mini ramp its definitely unique to most of the parks we already have.When i find out the official opening date ill let you know.

For more than 20 years Knight Bikes has been supporting the Miami Bmx scene. And unfortunately the time has come. Bob the owner ran into a bunch of financial slews than ran the shop into the ground. Yet there still might be hope of the shop resurrecting but for now its gone and for how long we dont know. Tom has been one of the most influential members of our bike scene. Always contributing to Atmosphere contests or setting up events. The guys over there looked out for us, and helped us out. It was a family and its sad to see it go. with that said Thank You Knight Bikes for everything.
